The Ruling Class (1972)

let’s revisit a cult classic for a little bit: the ruling class directed by peter medak, an acidic satire that targets the english class system and leaves no room for subtlety when doing so. it simply goes for absurd lines, bizarre moments and justly schizophrenic acts instead. with one of a hell performance delivered by peter o’toole.

once the 13th earl of gurney dies, the 14th one comes into play to acquire his own seat in the house of lords. that’s precisely where all the fun begins. why? because jack, the freshly anointed earl, is a wacko who believes he is god, sleeps on a cross (literally), conveys mystical oratories as a daily routine, sings to flowers and has a communist butler who enjoys seeing members of the ruling class kick the bucket one by one. of course that all these go against family members who are too interested in sticking like glue to their own privileges and social status. consequently, they marry him off, try to declare him incompetent and have him committed as a result. but jack’s own psychiatrist has something else on mind: a treatment performed by the high-voltage messiah. with nasty second-side effects.

sometimes, just sometimes, the ruling class is available to watch online for free.
