i’ve never actually got bored of watching dystopian SF films shot in times when i was just a possible future myself. george lucas’ debut feature falls in this category too. decades ahead of its time and refreshingly subversive, THX 1138 is rather low in thrilling action (the movie’s climax is all about a car chase scene and that’s it), but high in political innuendos.
synopsis: bald people living under a totalitarian regime that controls their emotions and sex drives by administering them a wide variety of drugs. full-scale lala-land, police brutality included. 24 hour surveillance. till THX 1138 goes off his daily drugs…
not acclaimed by critics. not too awarded either. slightly pretentious and cliché-istic, slightly boring, sometimes almost close to unwatchable. yet a film well worth watching for its intriguing use of raw sounds and colors, for the intense emotional impression it delivers and why not, for old times’ sake when buy more. buy more now. buy and be happy was merely a line in a SF script. and i guess that if you haven’t fallen asleep while watching kubrick’s space odyssey, then you stand a pretty good chance of watching this movie till its end credits start to roll.
